About Us
I left university in 1988 having undertaken a PhD in Pharmacology and joined the Inland Revenue as a direct entrant inspector. After passing the internal exams, I worked in the Large Business Office in Birmingham dealing with the tax affairs of some of the UK's largest groups of companies. I was transferred to a local District office as Deputy District Inspector following the birth of my daughter, where I undertook a full range of technical and investigation work involving income tax, corporation tax and capital gains tax as well as gaining familiarity with all procedure aspects of the work done by the Department. At this time I also had special responsibility for managing Employer Compliance work.
Since leaving the Inland Revenue in 2000, I initially worked as a consultant and lecturer for the PTP group. I left to set up my own business in 2004.
I have a varied client base including accountants and solicitors. As part of my consultancy I deal with a wide range of issues. These included tax planning for large and small businesses and individuals, and dealing with HMRC enquiries. I cover all areas of direct tax as well as Stamp Duty Land Tax.
The lecturing I do includes CPD training seminars for accountants and solicitors as well as production of computer training modules and bespoke training for different clients.
My experiences give me an ability to look at different aspects of tax in relation to any given scenario. I can understand the areas of risk from the Revenue's perspective and can give practical advice on dealing with those risks. I see my job as providing realistic and pragmatic solutions - I appreciate that tax is not necessarily the only thing which drives commercial transactions and realise that different solutions may be needed in different circumstances.
